Union History

Early History

In 2002, Benjamin Amauwah identified and informed the Asa people resident in the USA of the need for the unity, and advancement of the social welfare and culture of our Asa community. The people saw the need to form an organization where they can get to know and support one another, and also collectively perform charitable services to the community and other needy people in any possible way within the union’s costitution and the laws of the United States of America.

On November 28, 2002 in New Orleans, the name Asa Development Union, Inc. USA was adopted. The initial directors of the Union were Benjamin Amauwah and Chioma Onwukwe. The following members were present at the first annual convention and inauguration meeting of the Union:

  • Dr. and Mrs. Tony Kanu
  • Dr. and Mrs. Godwin Ananaba 
  • Mr. Levi Nwoko 
  • Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Nwogu 
  • Nze and Lolo Basil Osigwe 
  • Mr. Benjamin Amauwah

Initial Members

The first elected officers of the Union at the inauguration in 2002 were:

  • Mr. Benjamin Amauwah-National President 
  • Mr. Rufus Nwogu-National Secretary
  • Mrs Ngozi Kanu-National Treasurer 
  • Mr. Levi Nwoko-National Auditor

Also two patrons named below were appointed

  • Dr. Tony Kanu 
  • Dr. Godwin Ananaba

In 2003, additional officers were elected to fill the remaining offices:

  • Mr. Nabugwu Ezi-National Vice President 
  • Mr. Sylvester Chigbu-Natioanl Assistant Secretary 
  • Mr. Ngozi Onwukwe-National Financial Secretary 
  • Mrs. Chioma Ibeneme-National Social Secretary 
  • Mr. Chibuike Nwachi-Natioanl Provost

In addition, Mr. Isaac Okoro was appointed as a patron
